IT Configuration > Workplace Chat Desktop App

Be sure everything around IT works smoothly for Workplace.

            Overview

            Overview

The Workplace Chat desktop app for Windows and Mac lets you chat with your coworkers. It’s an alternative to chatting with coworkers on Workplace in a desktop browser.
To download the Workplace Chat app for your computer, first make sure you're logged into Workplace on the browser you're using. Then, click one of the links below depending on your operating system:

If you're logged into Workplace on the browser you're using and you're still having problems downloading Workplace Chat, then you may need to update your operating system.
Note: Workplace Chat doesn't require admin access, so anyone should be able to install the app – unless it's been blocked by a system administrator.

            Deploy Workplace Chat MSI

Deploy the Workplace Chat MSI for your organization

If you’re a system admin looking to install the Workplace Chat app for all the users in your organization, you can deploy the app via Windows installer (or .msi package)

            Supported Versions

            Supported Versions

We only support the latest 3 versions of the desktop app, or all app versions less than 6 months old – whichever is higher. This is so we can maintain a high bar of quality and ensure our customers have access to the latest bug fixes and improvements.

Once an older version of the app is no longer supported, users will be logged out of the app and prompted to install the latest version from the links above. After installing a supported version of the app, they can continue to use it as before.

N.B: As of 29 November 2023, all versions of the Work Chat Desktop app below v171.0.0.35.105 are no longer supported.

            What's new?
            • The external beta program for the Workplace Chat desktop app has launched as part of this version. Partners who sign up to the beta get access to pre-release versions of the app, so they can give feedback and help improve the experience.
            • A new button has been added when hovering over a chat thread, giving access to the chat menu and various actions. Previously you had to right-click on a thread to access the menu.
            • Minor updates to improve visual consistency between the Windows and macOS apps.
            Performance improvements
            • Faster loading of messages within a chat by optimising the loading of attachments in the sidebar.
            • Added more end-to-end tests to help reduce prevalence of bugs in future versions.
            Bug fixes
            • Fixed [Windows only]: When a user joined and then left a call in quick succession, the camera sometimes remained in an activated state, preventing other apps from using it.
            • Fixed: The save button by the thread description text field would show as active when no change had been made.
            • Fixed: Some users were unable to open the menu for message requests. The fix adds a button that stably opens the menu.
            • Fixed: The placeholder “Facebook User” displayed instead of “Workplace User” in chats that do not have a name assigned.
            • Fixed: Unread threads wouldn’t show when users enabled the compact threads list mode.
            • Fixed: The popup “Are you speaking?” displayed too often when audio input was detected during a call.
